日本の伝承において、カラス天狗は
山に棲む神秘的な存在として語り継がれています。

 

人ならざる力と知恵を持ち、
境界を越える存在として知られています。

本作では、その異質な存在感を
造形の中に落とし込みました。

 

額に配したマンダリンガーネットの周囲には、
神職の装束や御宮の装飾に用いられる《花菱》の意匠を、
また、髪の三つ編みには五穀豊穣を象徴する稲穂の形を取り入れています。

 

日常のすぐそばに、もうひとつの気配を
境界の気配を、そっと宿すリングです。

カラステングの物語

烏天狗
カラステング

カラステングは山伏の格好をしていることから、日本の山岳信仰と深く結びついているといわれています。

山の豊かな自然、それと同時にその雄大な姿や自然災害に対する畏怖・畏敬の念から山には神が住む、もしくは神が降臨する場所とされ、日本でも山では祭祀も多く行われてきました。
また日本の山岳信仰は山頂に達することが重要視され、そこから見える朝日(ご来光)に対しても強い信仰心があり、山岳信仰と太陽信仰に強い結びつきがあります。

カラステングには諸説あり、インド神話のガルーダが元になっているという説もあり、仏教の守護神が日本の山岳信仰と結びつき生まれたとも考えられるでしょう。

高尾山薬王院の御本尊である「飯綱大権現（いづなだいごんげん）」の姿はカラステングそのものであり、農耕神として、そして戦国時代には多くの武将より戦神として崇められてきました。カラステングは日本ならでは神道と仏教の二つの信仰の共存(神仏習合)、があったからこそ生み出された神様といえるでしょう。

In Japanese folklore, Karasu Tengu are
mysterious beings said to dwell in the mountains.

 

Known for their otherworldly presence,
they are often seen as figures that exist beyond boundaries.

This piece captures that distinct presence
through its form.

 

Around the mandarin garnet set at the forehead,
a hanabishi motif—often seen in ceremonial garments and shrine ornamentation—is expressed.
The braided elements of the hair are inspired by rice,
symbolizing abundance and prosperity.

 

Close to everyday life, another presence quietly lingers.

Story of Karasu Teng

Karasu Teng

Karasu Teng is said to be deeply connected with Japanese mountain worship, as it is dressed as a mountain ascetic.

Because of the abundance of nature in the mountains, as well as the awe and reverence for their majestic appearance and natural disasters, mountains are believed to be places where gods live or descend, and many rituals are performed in the mountains in Japan.
In addition, Japanese mountain worshipers place great importance on reaching the summit of a mountain and have a strong belief in the morning sunrise (The rising sun) that can be seen from there, thus creating a strong connection between mountain worship and sun worship.

There are many theories about the Karasu Teng, and some believe that it is based on Garuda from Indian mythology, and that it was created when a Buddhist guardian deity was combined with Japanese mountain worship.

The main deity of Yakuoin Temple on Mt. Takao is “Izuna Daigongen”, who is the very embodiment of Karasu Teng, and it has been worshipped as a god of agriculture, and as a god of war by many warlords during the Warring States period.
Karasu Teng is a deity that was created because of the coexistence of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs (syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism), which is unique to Japan.
